Raising Nebraska- The Raising Nebraska Exhibit at the Nebraska State Fair took home a couple of awards at the International Association of Fairs and Exhibitions. It took home awards for best overall agricultural exhibit and best new exhibit to promote agriculture. The exhibit was designed to help show people what Nebraska agriculture is all about and how great it really is.
ReplyDeleteGoat Cheese on the Rise- Milk and artisan cheese from goats and their milk is on the rise in the U.S. and parts around the world. There are about 30,000 goat farmers spread across all of the U.S. Goat Cheese was not actually commercialized in the U.S. until 1980. Residents of the U.S. have discovered the benefits of Goat dairy products and are liking them more and more and switching from cows to goats.

ReplyDeleteFor 65 percent of the world's population, the answer to the advertising jingle, "Got milk?" would be a resounding yes. That's changing now as consumer demand for goat milk and artisan cheese made from goat milk is on the rise. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there are now about 30,000 dairy goat farms spread across all 50 states, an impressive number considering that goat cheese wasn't commercially produced in the U.S. until 1980.
Big Harvest, State Fair -
For area livestock producers, prices were good, feed costs manageable and the grass crop good, though market deviations made margins tight at times for area cattle feeders.High livestock prices and Low crop prices.
Ericson Cattle Auction Report
ReplyDeleteThe Ericson Cattle auctions was held over the holidays and had a higher head count than last year but a smaller count than the previous week. The Ericson auction is held in Ericson, Nebraska. This Auction is mainly for bred heifers and cows. The majority of the cattle are Black Angus with a few Red angus. There were also a few Baldies (angus, herford) cross with high genetic lines. Some of the heifers sold were carrying top of the line AI calve and some were also naturally bred high strung calves.
Three State Beef Conference
Basically Nebraska beef producers meet with producers from Iowa and Missouri every year to discuss different topic on the industry. Topics titles this year include "Financial Impacts of Fertility and Infertility in the Current Cattle Market." This year meeting will be held in Iowa. On Jan. 15 there will be two sessions in Nebraska. The first will be at the Gage County UNL Extension Center in Beatrice. An evening session will be held at the UNL Ag Research and Development Center near Mead. There is a $25 registration fee.

Mike Johanns joined Deere & Co.'s corporate board this week just days after leaving the U.S. Senate.Deere announced the election of the former Nebraska governor on Wednesday. Johanns' replacement, Ben Sasse, was sworn in to the Senate on Monday.Deere Chairman and CEO Samuel Allen says Johanns' background in agriculture, foreign trade and governance will help the company.
ReplyDeletePork producers are gearing up to provide their customers with what they want--more pork and more bacon. According to a Purdue University Extension economist, the nation's hog producers have expanded the breeding herd by 4 percent and have already farrowed 3 percent more sows this past fall. The larger number of young pigs will begin to move pork production in early 2015 above levels from the previous year and could reach 7 percent higher by the end of 2015. Annual production may average 5 percent higher. This major increase comes after a series of years of smaller pork supplies dating back to 2007 when feed prices began to escalate and most recently due to significant baby pig death losses in 2014 due to PED.
