4/16/15 Case Study (50 word min)

One of Mara's responsibilities is to keep the supply cabinets stocked at work.  She shops for coffee and janitorial supplies and orders office supplies as needed.  Kristin needed to restock the paper towels in the ladies' room, so she borrowed Mara's key.  At the end of the day, as Mara walked to her car to go home, she remembered she forgot to get the cabinet keys back from Kristin.  She realized she would need them early in the morning to set up for a meeting.

She went back inside and found Kristin gathering supplies from the cabinet.  She had collected several binders, packages of pens, and mechanical pencils, highlighters and spiral-bound notebooks.  When Kristin saw Mara, she was startled.  She explained she had been working so late the past week that she was unable to pick up school supplies for her kids, and school was starting tomorrow.  Mara didn't know what to say.  She knows Kristin works extra hours and doesn't ask for compensation, but does that make it OK to take supplies from work?  Mara's employer entrusted her with the keys and made her responsible for supplies.  What should Mara do?

  1. No I don't think it makes it okay for her to take things. I would feel bad for her but also I would be upset that she was taking things from work. I wouldn't want her talking things from work, I would probably offer her some money for the supplies. I wouldn't tell on her right away I would just talk to her and warn her about it and tell her if she is caught again I would tell my boss.

  2. I think Mara should tell Kristin that it is not the company's duty to get school supplies for her children. She should have done that on her own. She maybe could take like one or two things, but I think the whole supply list is not okay. Also, Mara should let her boss do make the decision on whether or not Kristin gets into trouble or not.

  3. It's fine the woman works extra hours without pay. So the school supplies will serve as her compensation bureaucracy be scorned. She deserves atleast that and Im sure the company will do fine with a few missing supplies. Had she not worked extra hours without pay then she would not be justified in her actions.

  4. I think she should be buying that stuff on her own but sometimes you have to roll with the punches I think and sometimes that stuff is going to happen just say you saw them next time they try to do something bad to them.
