Kendra is the sales department manager and her boss is concerned about the appearance of some of their sales clerks, particularly Hunter. On his right arm, Hunter is sporting a large new tattoo of a vampire with blood dripping form its mouth. Kendra agrees some customers might find the tattoo offensive and that he should cover it up.
When Kendra talks to Hunter about it, he becomes defensive and claims customers think his new tattoo is cool. He says he belongs to a vampire organization and this is a big part of his life now. He tells her he's also considering having his teeth filed into points. He says she is being discriminatory because another employee has a tattoo of a cross on his arm and he has not been asked to cover it. Kendra likes Hunter because he is a good employee and one of their top salespeople. She knew he was into vampire movies and books, but she had no idea about how important this was in his life. The tattoo is also violent which borders on being problematic in terms of company expectation guidelines for salespeople. What should Kendra do?
Hunter has a very good point if someone else has a tattoo and isn't being asked to cover it that's not fair. If he is being asked to cover his then everyone should need to cover their tattoos. I think that it should become a rule that everyone has to cover all tattoos and if they don't they will be fired. I don't like tattoos that are visible and I think all tattoos should be covered in a work area.
ReplyDeleteI think that its fine to have it uncovered as long as it does not become a problem. I have never had a problem with tattoos and I fell that they are alright as long as they are not offensive. I think that if the company starts getting complaints that then it is fair that he has to cover it but until then I don't see the problem with it.
ReplyDeleteI think everyone has a right to express themselves in any way they want. I know that jobs are different in terms of appearance, but if he is the only one being asked to cover it and the others also have tattoos then it is considered to be discrimination. Kendra should not hire people she doesn't see fit to work in her sales department. I don't think Hunter is in the wrong here. Kendra is just going to far in her opinion.
ReplyDeleteI think that Kendra should just let Hunter have his tattoo and keep it uncovered. I would not talk to Hunter about it anymore as long as people do not start to complain about it and Hunter does not start to lose customers as a salesman, or start to make the store lose customers. I think that people should learn to accept people more as well and make situations like this one we are speaking of, not even a concern. If someone wants to get a certain piercing or tattoo or whatever, go for it. Whatever makes someone happy, they should do it then.
